Curatorial analysis

A crystalline geometry intervenes in the natural fragility of the floral arrangement. The image does not describe carnations withering inside a domestic vase, but rather their dissection into luminous planes that open like a prismatic fan across the verticality of the board.

The core of the painting operates through a rigorous triangular partitioning. The stems and leaves do not bend with the organic softness of living foliage; they break into sharp wedges that ascend and divide the space into parallel vectors. These earthy green lines direct the gaze toward the upper mass, where the lilac and pink petals lose their spherical volume to resolve into overlapping, almost translucent glazes that seem to refract light filtered through an invisible shutter.

The waxed wood technique provides a matte, silken quality that tempers any chromatic stridency. Instead of a thick impasto, a rubbed surface is revealed, where the friction of pigment over the bare ground leaves subtle directional marks. Those traces of application converse with the straight edges of the drawing, contributing a tactile warmth that softens the analytical severity of the composition. The base of the vessel, barely hinted at through vertical planes in bone and sienna tones, sustains the visual tension without needing to anchor itself to a tabletop or a narrative setting.

By dispensing with atmosphere and cast shadows, the space remains suspended against an off-white background that envelops the structure like pure air. The still life thus becomes an inquiry into order and synthesis: the carnation endures not through its botanical anecdote, but through the rhythmic resonance of its violet hues against the purity of the linear cut.
