Curatorial analysis

A veil of warm wax softens the architecture of the painting. On the wooden ground, Olimpia Couto arranges a floral scene that dispenses with traditional botanical softness to settle into a geometric, almost architectural calm. The blossoms are not conceived as mere fleeting ornaments, but as feathery stains of pink and magenta pigment floating above angular planes, barely contained by fine lines that structure the space into luminous facets.

Toward the base, the vessels appear synthesized into chalk-white trapezoidal pillars and a central volume of earthy grey. This severe verticality engages directly with the green stems, drawn with the sharpness of a blade or a botanical needle, which pass through the containers and rise straight toward the blooms. There is no conventional atmospheric perspective; depth is resolved through overlapping layers, subtle incisions, and transparencies reminiscent of a stele or a low relief carved in plaster and wood.

The waxed medium lends the surface a distinctive tactile quality. The finish absorbs and reflects light gently, without harsh glare, allowing the dry, scumbled brushstrokes of the petals to appear dissolving into the ivory background. In this treatment lies a sense of permanence where the flower, ephemeral by nature, remains suspended in a state of fossil-like preservation, caught between the linear order of the background and the vaporous dryness of the pigment.

By placing a solitary, dark stem to the right, devoid of corolla and framed between two white monoliths, the composition introduces an unexpected counterpoint of silence. It is this lateral void that balances the vibrant density of the clusters on the left, turning the still life into an exercise in spatial restraint where organic fragility and linear discipline coexist in serene equilibrium.
