Curatorial analysis
Curatorial analysis
A rectangular block of ash and olive tones interrupts the emptiness of the paper, structured by vertical bands that evoke scaffolding, gridded facades, or shadowy construction ladders. Over this architectural severity emerge two striking material accents: a curved incision of gold leaf, rough-textured and warmly radiant, breaking across the lower edge of the rectangle, and a small ultramarine rhomboid seal hovering midway up like a dark talisman.
The lines articulating that central structure extend toward the margins in thin graphite guidelines and white strokes, heightening the vertical tension across the entire sheet. Above, these axes support a row of freehand-drawn bicycles, frail and airborne like musical notes across an invented staff. This balance defies conventional gravity: the dense and shadowy claims the center of the visual field, while in the open areas the drawing dissolves into ethereal loops and faint linear outlines lightly grazed by the pencil.
Calligraphic French script traverses the plane with questions reiterated in the margins ("C'est quoi la vie?", "C'est quoi l'âme"). The words gradually break down into dashes and black bars reminiscent of telegraphic code or a subtle rhythmic cadence. Here, the memory of a planned urban landscape, the lightness of daily travel symbolized by the suspended wheels, and the vulnerability of an intimate inquiry inscribed by hand directly onto the print coexist.
The counterpoint between the printed graphic register and manual intervention gives the piece the resonance of a reflective palimpsest. At the precise intersection between the gleam of gold leaf, muted intermediate greys, and the dispersion of graphite, the composition maintains its magnetism by dwelling in constant tension, suspended between the solidity of the scaffold and the airy flight of thought.
