Curatorial analysis

The weight of the head resting in both hands commands the gravity of this print. The bare arms, rendered in stark white, function as two diagonal pillars supporting a face segmented into geometric planes, where dark, widened eyes stare toward a suspended point beyond the viewer. The frontality is relentless: the apparent symmetry of the posture is broken only by the subtle tilt of the skull, the tension of curved fingers against the cheeks, and the solitary presence of a blue cup in the foreground.

The carving into the wood reveals a contained and rigorous tension. The highlights do not stem from applied pigment but from the direct gouging of the block, allowing the limbs and facial features to emerge like bone surfaces silhouetted against the dark torso and the porous texture of the background. This facial mask, divided into sharp chiaroscuro planes reminiscent of totemic carving, strips the portrait of realistic anecdote to shift it into pure introspection. The grain of the wood, visible in the dark backdrop and across the tabletop, provides a vibrant surface quality that contrasts with the clean geometry of the gouge marks.

Color operates with calculated restraint. Against the dominance of black, raw paper, and the deep wine tone of the garment, the petrol blue concentrated in the cup, beaded bracelet, and earring acts as an essential visual anchor. That small cup, diminutive beside the monumental scale of the arms and head, anchors the temporality of the scene, grounding the intimate pause of waiting or vigil where the figure's silence completely overtakes the space.
