A flat, homogeneous green absorbs the entire field before the eye discovers that a large-scale biological and topographic mass is floating within it. Across this uniform expanse, Maffioli deposits a silhouette that wavers between the outline of a rugged coastline and a submerged geological creature. The canvas makes no attempt to disguise the artifice of its construction: it sets an even, almost graphic paint surface against an uncontrolled surge of pigments mingling through pure physical density.
Within that greenish terrain, tides of white, yellow, and emerald unfold. The pouring process creates marbled undulations reminiscent of sedimentary strata, oceanic currents, or cartographic contour lines. Toward the right, the shape narrows and rises into a sinuous appendage that holds in gravitational suspense the most forceful element on the canvas: a thick, vermilion disk of raised relief, worked in a concentric vortex that retains the unctuous density of acrylic paste sculpted directly with hand or knife.
Opposite this dense, rotating sun dominating the upper right, a second red form of smaller scale and oblong shape anchors the lower left. This crimson pellet, horizontally striated, operates as an optical counterweight and charges a quiet diagonal across the expanse. The relationship between these two scarlet accents and the surrounding green territory destabilizes conventional assumptions of horizon and geographic perspective.
While the title anchors the viewer to a specific coastal geography, the imagery dispenses with literal recording in order to explore landscape memory through raw physical energy. The collision between the stillness of the monochrome ground, the liquid chance of the marbled striations, and the tactile vibration of the red nodes transforms the picture plane into an unadulterated sensory event, where territory becomes simultaneously map, matter, and tide.
