Curatorial analysis

The air vibrates across the entire surface before settling into forms. In this valley, light does not bathe the ground from above; rather, it seems to emerge from the very texture of the grassland, worked in slanted furrows of yellows, ochres, and reddish shadows that rise toward the center of the canvas. The brushstroke, short and decisive, dispenses with strict contours to construct space through tactile accumulations of oil paint.

Two massive plant forms frame the midground and charge the composition with tension. On the left, an open, intricate tree spreads its branches, casting a cool shadow across the slope; on the right, the row of dense, vertical pines that gives the painting its title cuts diagonally across the hill, drawing the eye into the depth of the field. It is within this balance of visual weights that scale becomes palpable: the three horses grazing across the plateau are reduced to small yet grounded silhouettes, anchors of quiet life amid an imposing expanse.

Behind this rural scene rises the mountain range, handled in a palette of deep blues, violets, and indigos that contrasts sharply with the warmth of the earth below. The mountains function as a monumental dam, separating the stillness of the pasture from a turbulent sky where clouds dissolve in swirling strokes of white, cyan, and golden glints. There is no atmospheric rigidity here; wind and solar refraction register in every mark of the tool.

The landscape departs from mere topographic documentation to evoke a direct sensory experience of the mountain climate. Chromatic vibration and broken brushwork capture a moment in which the calm of grazing livestock coexists with the geological and luminous force of the highlands, holding the fleeting fullness of a late afternoon.
