Curatorial analysis
An avalanche of phosphor and plastic rushes toward the viewer without conceding a single inch of respite. Carlos Tapia constructs on this large-format canvas a cabinet of media curiosities where cathode-ray tube sets, piled at unstable angles, form a claustrophobic yet magnetic wall. Horror vacui is not merely a decorative device here, but the physical translation of a visual overstimulation that seems never to switch off.
The structure is sustained by a frenetic rhythm of ellipses, diagonals, and relentless black outlines. Through this precise drawing, akin to comic strips and commercial graphics, the acrylic deploys an ultra-saturated palette: electric yellows, turquoises, magentas, and oranges that vie for luminous supremacy. The light in the painting does not emanate from real space, but from the simulated glow of screens, casting an artificial radiance that flattens with identical hierarchy the classical cherub, comic onomatopoeia, heroic logos, and twentieth-century animated fauna.
Amid the tide of broadcasts, several felines emerge to subvert the order of the scene. A stylized, tense yellow cat turns its back on the viewer to gaze mesmerized at the glare of a monitor, while others stare forward, crossing their living gaze with the cartoon faces frozen in glass. This intrusion introduces a crucial tension, that of flesh and instinct confronting the electrical artifact.
The title poses a sharp question that remains unresolved on the canvas. This invisible collector could be the one hoarding the casings of an already obsolete technology, the contemporary subject whose emotional memory was colonized by broadcast television, or the viewer themselves who, standing before the piece, experiences the jolt of instantly recognizing each of these pop relics.
