Curatorial analysis

Two wide, hyper-vigilant eyes burst forth from the pediment of a vernacular dwelling, shattering the inert condition of the peri-urban landscape. What initially presents itself as a meticulous record of precarious construction (corrugated zinc sheets, weathered wooden planks, rocks piled at the base) immediately transforms into a conscious entity. The house does not merely inhabit the space of San Miguel de Escazú; it actively stares back at the viewer, infusing the everyday environment with an uncanny animistic dimension.

The drawing articulates this presence through a rigorous mastery of chiaroscuro. The density of deep blacks in the foliage and interior voids contrasts with the modulated grays of the sky and the worn patina of the walls. The diagonal lines of electrical cables, alongside the precarious verticality of the utility post and the roofline cross, tighten the upper plane, enclosing the scene within a network of mundane connections that heighten the atmosphere of the place. The texture of the graphite and charcoal lends every material (the suggested rust, the roughness of stone, the glassy smoothness of the cornea) a tactile weight that firmly grounds the fantasy in a forceful physical reality.

By titling the piece as an incursion into the astral plane, the artist ensures that the framing transcends documentary costumbrismo. Vernacular architecture ceases to be a mere social container and becomes an organism guarding or projecting a collective psyche. A continuous tension exists between the heaviness of the rubble and the lightness of the sky, between spiritual vigilance and material decay. That frontal gaze, devoid of hostility yet laden with secrecy, arrests the beholder and upends the usual hierarchy: standing before this facade, it is the viewer who is ultimately exposed and examined.
