Curatorial analysis

A swirling mass of matter dominates the canvas surface with the physical violence of a blizzard. In the upper half, the sky does not recede into depth but advances toward the viewer through ridges and folds of white, ash, and charcoal pigment, handled with a sculptural density that traps shadows in every groove. Light here does not illuminate from the outside; it emanates from the build-up of pure white battling against leaden tones in an unrelenting cycle of opacity and transparency.

Anchored in convulsed ground across the middle register, a cluster of shrubs and bare branches withstands the atmospheric onslaught. These dark, almost calligraphic marks disrupt the landscape's horizontality through sharp incisions scratched directly into the impasto. Within this tangle of browns and blacks, surprising flecks of vermilion and ochre smolder like hidden embers. Below, the vortex dissolves into churning foam and water, mirroring the sky's turbulence and trapping the vegetation between two moving chasms.

The title swerves away from a strictly topographical reading, introducing an unsettling suggestion. The dense thicket and the clearings opening amid the chaos take on the appearance of a watchful gaze, or alternatively place the viewer at the very core of an overwhelming perception. Hernández Martínez does not depict an external gale, but rather an interior state of alert before the uncontrollable. The canvas acts as a seismic register where the pictorial gesture does not illustrate the fury of the elements, but embodies it through its own material weight.
