Curatorial analysis

The vanishing point rushes toward the rear, yet it offers no escape: this bus moves forward packed with a crowd that either stares ahead or retreats into its own weariness. José Alejandro Herrera places the viewer directly in the driver’s cabin, sharing the frame with the yellow-shirted driver who grips the steering wheel and shifts gears. Between them and the rest of the coach lies a collection of humble everyday talismans: teddy bears resting on the dashboard, a coin tray, and polished metal handrails that parcel out the interior with prison-like rigidity.

The central aisle’s forced perspective organizes a procession of absorbed gazes. On the left, a woman clutches her mobile phone, staring straight out of the canvas, while beside her a man embraces a briefcase upon which the artist inscribes his own signature and the date 2014. Further back, a standing female figure seen from behind, arms raised toward the ceiling grab handles, introduces a sharp vertical tension that disrupts the rhythm of the orange vinyl seats. The repetition of faces, defined by incisive black contours and earthy shading, conveys a shared fatigue that borders on tragic caricature.

Beneath the curved roof, dominated by an earthy ochre and glowing interior lamps that warm the atmosphere, the scenery framed by the windows is an almost abstract blur of pastel washes and diluted greens. Real life unfolds inside, trapped within this rolling capsule where forced coexistence feels simultaneously communal and detached. The paint, laid down with graphic firmness and dark outlines that bind each human presence, intensifies the sensation of claustrophobia and rattling routine. The commute thus becomes a collective portrait of the urban pulse, where every individual travels in profound solitude despite brushing against another's shoulder.
