Curatorial analysis

The weight of wood governs this colonial interior. From the tie beams of the dark timber ceiling to the rustic posts and the diagonal planks of the open screen on the left, organic matter encloses a dense, almost tactile silence. Antonio Mejía approaches the nave of the Orosí church not as an imposing monument, but through an intimate, domestic scale of contemplation, where the visible grain of the canvas lends a tactile weave to the aged surfaces.

Perspective is structured along a measured recession toward the presbytery in the background, paced by the steady cadence of pillars dividing the space. Yet this solemn order is interrupted by subtle tensions: the gray verticality of the slender foreground post, the stony mass of the baptismal font surmounted by a sea-green crucifix, and, above all, the sharp light flooding through the lateral doorway on the right. Through this opening bursts the radiant clarity of the exterior gardens, a vivid green and cerulean blue that destabilizes the temple's ochre twilight and lets the outside landscape breathe inward.

Liturgical objects are not displayed with theatrical grandeur, but suspended in communal routine. The succinctly rendered Christ, the black-framed painting hung upon the central post, and the sequence of devotional canvases along the whitewashed wall coexist with the plain wooden pews. Sunlight washing across the terracotta tile floor records the invisible passage of centuries of prayer. In just twenty-three by thirty centimeters, Mejía gathers a quiet meditation on suspended time: an architecture of mudbrick and timber where the sacred resides not in ornamentation, but in the austere serenity of shelter.
