Curatorial analysis

A single gleam of cobalt disrupts the canvas's geological density. That small pane, positioned toward the upper third, functions as a millimetric visual escape in the midst of a monumental architecture that seems to emerge from the earth itself. Surrounding that aperture, the space is articulated through a grid of beams, rusted timbers, and scaffolding supporting a fragmented collective memory.

The rhythm of the painting rests on the constant tension between the heaviness of the structures and the weightless levity of luminous masses. Clouds of golden dust or earthy vapor drift diagonally across the surface, veiling and revealing by sections a catalogue of human effigies. Within the lateral crevices and compartments, rows of hieratic faces peer out, mouths agape in a muted cry or gazes suspended, sculpted like totems or archaeological relics trapped within the wall. Toward the upper perimeters, silhouettes of gothic spires and distant citadels emerge, while monoliths rise at the base to anchor the scene to an ancient ground.

Matter behaves here like sediment: Zúñiga builds the acrylic through layered rough impasto, scrapings, and ochre glazes that mimic the oxidation of metal and the porosity of stone. The light does not originate from a recognizable external source, but from those warm mists floating across the shadowed framework, imparting an almost ceremonial aura to the composition.

That blue window concentrates the entire metaphorical weight of the painting. Hemmed in between eroded pillars and petrified faces, that modest patch of sky becomes a promise of open air, a chromatic release that destabilizes the solemnity of the whole and reminds us that, even under the overwhelming gravity of history and silence, a crack looking out toward the infinite always endures.
