Curatorial analysis

A sharp vertical line divides the plane, summoning two different centuries to face one another. On the left, a male figure wears a black doublet and a ruffled collar, sporting the geometric haircut and stylized hand typical of Mannerist portraiture. On the right, a woman from the turn of the millennium holds a casual gaze, enveloped in a tight white dress that echoes fashion editorial aesthetics. Neither body touches or interacts within the pictorial space; nevertheless, they share an identical frontality that directly addresses the viewer.

This opposition operates not only iconographically, but also orchestrates the print's entire chromatic weight. The man's dark, austere mass rests against an ash-violet background, restrained and quiet, while the female figure emerges through the brightness of her light garment against a dense, vibrant, sanguine terracotta red. Shadows on the faces and arms have been reduced to clean blocks of ink, a graphic synthesis reminiscent of pop prints that strips the figures of secondary anecdotes and heightens their bodily presence.

The title, suspended in an unfinished conditional clause, sparks a tension between the historical memory of court portraiture and the media canon of contemporary beauty. This juxtaposition raises a question about desire, status, and the poses that painting has forged across the centuries. Rojas relieves the courtly figure of its original solemnity to pair it with the distant sensuality of the runway, showing that visual seduction ultimately remains an exercise in shared theatricality.
