Curatorial analysis

A black porcelain coffee pot, trimmed with antique gold and presided over by a blooming yellow rose, commands the center of the space with the sculptural firmness of a commemorative monument. The paintwork builds the curvature of the ceramic body through finely measured tonal shifts, where highlights across the dark glaze and metallic modulations along the handle, spout, and lid lend the object a tangible gravity. It is not an item resting casually upon a table, but a figure standing with rigorous frontality, claiming absolute ownership of the vertical axis.

This dark weight finds its counterpoint in an atmosphere of weathered paper, splatters, and damp stains. The artist turns to collage as an archaeological substrate, gathering fragments of Costa Rican newspapers from the late 1960s. Clippings of political reporting from the Trejos Fernández administration, advertisements for women's swimwear, and commercial notices emerge through parchment-toned glazes. The faded typography and the dust of printed time compose a historical backdrop where the printed word sheds its journalistic immediacy to become pure texture, a distant echo situating the scene in a specific era.

In titling it as a family portrait, the work transfers human identity onto the dignity of ceremonial tableware. The service piece, reserved for special occasions and handed down across generations, assumes the role of a silent guardian of domestic memories and intimate conversations never recorded by public chronicles. Between the fragile impermanence of yellowing newsprint and the solemn endurance of decorated porcelain, the object becomes a reliquary holding lineage, domestic affections, and quiet household rituals.
