Curatorial analysis

A banquet table set by candlelight usually promises a human presence, but here the dominant species has been completely supplanted. In Dinner Party (Fiesta en la Cena), Melissa Matamoros convenes an ornithological conclave that commandeers the pomp of the European courtly still life. From the abyssal darkness of the background, an exuberant Neotropical fauna surges across sumptuous petrol-blue tablecloths, transforming the refinement of the banquet into a territory of wild, overflowing vitality.

The visual weight is articulated through a rigorous architecture of tensions. On the right flank, the sinuous and monumental silhouette of a heron establishes a vertical boundary that balances the scene, while a quetzal suspended in mid-flight crowns the upper axis like a guardian deity. Below, atop the crowded surface of the table, the traditional order of crystal glassware and candelabras fractures: a toucan opens its beak from a bentwood chair, tiny tanagers peck at the exposed pulp of soursop and papaya, and dozens of avian gazes intersect in a noisy yet frozen choreography.

The acrylic operates with a precision that emulates the glazes of classical oil painting. Light does not emanate from a uniform external source, but from the internal flicker of burning candles, alternating enveloping shadows with meticulous highlights on iridescent plumage, glistening seeds, and the gleaming crystal of wine goblets.

This feast subverts the somber warnings of the historical vanitas. Rather than recalling decay or the transience of worldly pleasures, the scene celebrates a festive occupation where biodiversity takes the place of absent diners. A quiet irony underlies this opulence: the animals do not lie hunted on serving trays; instead, they preside over the celebration, partake in the banquet, and claim center stage.
