Curatorial analysis

An incandescent sky burns behind a thicket that refuses to dissolve. On this impressively scaled canvas, Melissa Matamoros confronts the extreme warmth of dusk with the stone-like density of a winged fauna that colonizes the vertical plane. There is no gentle depth: the landscape recedes only far enough to silhouette against the fire the ominous, fascinating shape of an ornithological congregation where black is not the absence of light, but an infinite modulation of textures, steely sheens, and plumage nuances.

The gaze finds no rest because the space functions like a crowded tapestry. Monstera leaves, palms, and vines do not constitute a decorative background, but a structural network holding each specimen in a tense hierarchy. A monumental vulture in the upper right third balances the visual weight of the sharp-billed, crimson-collared toucan on the opposite side. Between them, sleepless owls, cracids, tanagers, and smaller birds inhabit the gaps in an expectant stillness. Almost none of the creatures appear distracted; their yellow, turquoise, and vermilion pupils lock onto the viewer or watch the edges of the frame, turning botanical exuberance into a court of silent witnesses.

The thermal contrast is relentless: the pure, almost volcanic orange consumes the horizon while deep greens and anthracite blacks maintain an impenetrable chill. This ensemble carries echoes of nineteenth-century natural history plates, yet stripped of their taxonomic, domesticating impulse. Matamoros subverts the logic of the scientific inventory by crowding her subjects into a theatrical drama bordering on the mythical. The jungle ceases to be an idyllic Eden and manifests instead as a threshold, a suspended moment where dusk signals both the end of the day and the imminence of a night ruled by sleepless gazes.
