Curatorial analysis

The gouge cutting into the wood does not seek to soften peasant labor, but to grant it an almost totemic gravity. Two frontal oxen dominate the nearest plane, asserting their heavy heads and the sharp curve of their horns like an insurmountable wall. This strength does not reside solely in the animals, but in the relentless axis of the vertical goad held by the driver, a line of tension that cleaves the frame and anchors the shared strain of men and beasts against the road.

Amighetti resolves the scene in an absolute contrast between the impenetrable mass of ink and the light welling up from the paper's raw pulp. Horizontal incisions across the ground suggest wet, rutted earth where reflections gleam with luminous sharpness. Across the haunches of the oxen and the bent back of the laborer, the carved white gouges act not as mere outlines, but as folds of muscular tension and fabric stiffened by sweat. Above, a second figure labors over the cart's load, doubling the fatigue on an upper register that binds human toil directly to the dark crests of the mountainous horizon.

To the right, the scale drops sharply toward domestic stillness: a rural hut where a small silhouette waits in deep shadow beside the slatted walls. This counterpoint between the physical strain of transit and the quiet inertia of home introduces a restrained, solemn rhythm. Within barely twenty square centimeters, the print distills a vision in which rural life sheds every trace of picturesque charm, standing instead as a daily struggle, stark and poetic, carved purely from edge and shadow.
