Curatorial analysis

A piece of outerwear hanging from a wooden hanger usually evokes the immediate absence of the body that inhabits it, yet here the fabric renounces its domestic condition to become a cosmic landscape in perpetual torsion. Erika Stanley petrifies knitwear into resin, subjecting it to a centripetal force that transforms the chest and sleeves into a gravitational vortex. The ribbed collar anchors the formal structure at its apex, while the lower section spills over in heavy waves and sculpted folds that defy the natural drape of cloth.

Across this dense topography, the painterly matter functions like a nebula. Minute strokes of ocher, glowing vermilion, and verdigris green saturate the surface, flecked with tiny luminous dots reminiscent of constellations or flashes of stardust. From the folds emerge neither buttons nor seams, but orbs that alter the object's scale: on the upper right flank emerges a diminutive terrestrial globe, with recognizable continents against a turquoise sea, held almost like a scepter by a twisted sleeve; below, an ocher sphere nests in the bottom swirl, while a third round body peeks between dry leaves or green husks, introducing a botanical dimension amidst the celestial order.

This oscillation between the everyday and the planetary destabilizes any linear reading. The sweater ceases to be a human vessel, acting instead as a vessel for the visible universe, or as a metaphor for warmth conceived as a total habitat. The rigidity of the resin, concealed beneath a tactile treatment that simulates thick ribbed yarn, freezes a motion seemingly caught mid-spin. Around the World proposes a fascinating intersection between the intimacy of clothing and sidereal immensity, trapping the rotation of the stars within the heavy folds of a garment hanging in the void.
