Curatorial analysis

A sharp cut of emerald green and gold marbled paper interrupts the crown of the face, replacing hair with a suspended, irregular geometry. That fracture defines the tension of the piece: a direct coexistence between the almost ethereal smoothness of the figurative drawing and the raw materiality of collage. At the center, the portrait emerges from a white ground through subtle modeling in charcoal and earth tones, achieving soft volume in the full lips, the bridge of the nose, and frontal eyes that hold the viewer's gaze without drama.

The figure is simultaneously enclosed and sheltered by two opposing realities. At the base, torn fragments of the same marbled paper form an abstract collar, a garment anchoring the bust to the lower edge. Toward the sides, the pictorial space closes in with violent charcoal strokes that scrub against the grain of the canvas, revealing the texture of the support. Over this dense darkness, patches of gold leaf are embedded, immediately echoing sacred iconography or devotional altarpieces, yet stripped of any specific dogma.

This contemporary niche-like atmosphere lends the title, A la Espera (Waiting), an existential rather than merely temporal weight. The youth of the subject seeks neither anecdote nor descriptive narrative; it remains contained within a dense silence where time seems to have halted. Light does not emanate from a discernible external source, but from the white of the support itself, radiating from behind the head like an organic halo struggling through dark pigment and metallic gleam. Within that threshold of contained stillness, the presence of the individual asserts itself as an act of quiet resistance.
