Curatorial analysis

Three slender women wearing voluminous headdresses surround an impossible piece of furniture: a chair with a double backrest, painted in an apple green that deliberately disrupts the chromatic density of their gowns. Their hands barely graze the woodwork in a restrained gesture, suspended between courtly manners and silent conspiracy.

The pictorial space operates with the logic of a theatrical proscenium. An upper border of golden filigree, worked with incisions and arabesques directly into the paint layer, frames a flat cream backdrop that projects the figures toward the viewer. Across the floor, broken passages of cobalt blue and earthy glazes dissolve realistic perspective, isolating the figures within an ageless atmosphere governed not by ordinary gravity but by dramatic tension.

Gallardo articulates the flared skirts through a network of fine sgraffito that exposes warm underlying layers, lending the textiles a weathered sheen reminiscent of antique damask. This tactile vibration contrasts sharply with the ghostly pallor of the faces, whose sharp profiles resemble porcelain masks turned toward one another. The dynamic among them relies on lowered gazes and measured gestures; none sits in the chair, and none appears inclined to yield it.

The title introduces an incisive paradox. Nothing in the austere composure of the three figures suggests the euphoria of an overt victory. Instead, the triumph suggested here seems rooted in the discreet conquest of a position, captured in that precise moment when a tacit agreement or a subtle struggle of wills is sealed without a single spoken word.
