Curatorial analysis

Three black porcelain teacups stacked in tense equilibrium dominate the space, presented with the density and sculptural weight of a domestic monument. Marijose Terán deliberately dispenses with any human figure to propose, starting from the title, an unusual portrait: bodies transformed into vessels that support one another, fit together, and depend on external stability to avoid collapse. The velvety finish of the dark ceramic contrasts with the worn, coppery gleam of the gilded rims and ornate handles, revealing a painterly craft in which light outlines dense, almost tactile volumes that seem to hover slightly above the surface.

The background operates as a stratum of fragmentary memory. Composed through clippings of vintage newspapers, typographic transfers, and glazes that simulate the patina of oxidized paper, this graphic wall holds shoe advertisements, social announcements, and fading traces of damask wallpaper. It is not merely a decorative backdrop; it is the temporal sediment of an era, a sort of intimate yet collective chronicle upon which the represented lineage rests. The paint drips, erodes, and spatters in white and sepia, as though time itself had worn away the physical substrate of recollection.

A yellow rose blooms at the center of the stack, the sole botanical spark that softens the austerity of the ensemble and evokes the traditional motifs of inherited chinaware. As the top cup tilts, its luminous white interior is laid bare to the viewer, turning the object into a receptive yet empty vessel. This vertical gathering of tableware does not celebrate material abundance, but rather the intricate mechanics of familial ties, where tradition, shared fragility, and the weight of preceding generations are safeguarded beneath an austere elegance.
