Curatorial analysis

A cadence of wavy horizontal bands spans the plane from side to side, imposing a visual filter that alters the perception of the submerged school of fish. This regular modulation of light and shadow behaves like a liquid shutter or the systematic refraction of surface ripples, interposing itself between the viewer's gaze and the fauna inhabiting the depths.

Beneath this luminous grid, the fish emerge with almost scientific anatomical precision, yet remain suspended in an environment devoid of any seabed or background cues. Gerardo González distributes the specimens in conflicting directions: some ascend at a strict vertical angle, others veer toward the margins or cross along tense diagonals, establishing a dynamic of silent alertness. The wide, circular eye of each animal, unblinking and fixed, accentuates the uncanny nature of the scene, transforming a natural subject into an enigmatic gathering where time appears to have stalled.

The pictorial surface is resolved through meticulously applied glazes and subtle transitions. Silvery and grayish tones, accented by faded pink and coppery sheens on the fins, demonstrate a rigorous observation of scaly textures and the tautness of aquatic skin. However, this tactile plausibility directly confronts the abstract rigidity of the luminous waves superimposed upon them; light does not envelop the forms organically, but rather sections them rhythmically into parallel bands.

The square format of eighty centimeters concentrates this friction between the organic and the geometric. What could have functioned as a conventional zoological study instead unfolds as a contained, suspended atmosphere, where the density of dark water holds the creatures in perpetual watchfulness, arrested at the exact threshold where the surface of the water and the abyss dialogue without touching.
