Curatorial analysis

A sharp tear breaches the stillness of the atmosphere, fracturing the visual pact of the landscape. In the upper center of the canvas, a faux sky-blue surface tears open, revealing the three-dimensional folds of its own reverse side. Through this jagged opening, what appears is not the neutral void of a wall, but another luminous dimension: a horizontal band where absolute nocturnal blackness descends sharply toward an amber glow, resembling a smoldering dusk shielded behind the daytime facade.

Below, the sea extends through a deliberately softened pictorial treatment. Gerardo González renders the swell with velvety transitions of petrol greens and muted blues shrouded in mist, where a single foaming crest hints at the tide's direction before dissolving into the horizon. This hazy gradation, executed with a delicate technique that almost erases the brushstroke, produces an impression of infinite depth that clashes abruptly with the sharp geometry of the tear above.

This collision between two visual registers turns the canvas into an inquiry on painting itself. On one hand, the seascape operates as a credible, atmospheric view of quiet waters; on the other, the rupture functions as a trompe-l'œil exposing the fictional nature of representation. As they curl outward, the torn edges cast painted shadows across the sky, granting the air a tangible, fragile body susceptible to cutting and decay.

The viewer remains caught between two irreconcilable spatialities. The first invites contemplation of a coast wrapped in calm fog, while the second reveals that this firmament is merely a thin scenic skin. As the daytime blue rips apart, it exposes a burning night poised to consume the apparent serenity of the waters, leaving a quiet tension suspended between what the eye beholds and the hermetic truth lurking behind.
