Curatorial analysis
A three-by-three arrangement transforms the canvas into a botanical specimen sheet or a display case of domestic relics. Nine handkerchiefs rest against an unprimed, raw background that preserves the warmth and coarse grain of the fabric, establishing an immediate dialogue between the tangible support and the illusory weightlessness of the painted objects. Each piece displays a meticulous variation of lace, drawn thread work, or floral cutwork, rendered with near-surgical precision where acrylic glazes mimic both the airy sheer of fine linen and the dense weave of embroidery.
The strict order of the grid, which initially evokes a bridal trousseau or a family heirloom passed down through generations, is subtly unsettled. The handkerchief on the middle right edge abandons the orthogonal frontality and lies rotated on a diagonal, its folded corner introducing volume and shadow into an otherwise strictly bidimensional field. This slight geometric deviation anticipates the decisive disruption brought by the lower calligraphy.
At the foot of the canvas, a handwritten inscription in sober cursive states the title: «nueve pañuelos para lágrimas de cocodrilo». That single phrase dismantles any complacent reading around devotion, mourning, or domestic nostalgia. The handkerchiefs cease to be vessels of genuine grief and are instead exposed as accessories to a social farce, exquisitely decorated instruments designed to catch theatrical, feigned tears.
The pictorial material operates with impeccable economy. The contrast between solid whites, sheer glazes revealing the raw ground, and the fine brown linework of the script lends the piece the aura of an ethnographic catalog. In doing so, the work hovers between fascination with artisanal craft and a piercing critique of the performances of propriety.
