Curatorial analysis

Weight and stillness govern this drawing. A female figure lies reclined upon a barely suggested surface, filling the frame with a round, substantial scale that transcends any decorative restraint. Sonia Romero dispenses with spatial anecdotes; there is no bed, no room, no visible horizon. It is the very volume of the body, modeled with charcoal or graphite on warm-toned paper, that invents gravity and defines the space it occupies.

The anatomy is articulated through gentle diagonals and continuous curves. The bent right arm cradles the sleeping head, whose features rest in absolute surrender, while the torso and hips widen monumentally toward the center of the sheet. A clear contrast emerges between the serenity of the face and the material tension of the drapery: the cloth covering the lap cascades into angular folds, deeply shaded in its creases, serving as a visual anchor that balances the smooth, luminous surface of the skin.

The handling of light favors tonal gradation over harsh contrast. Illumination settles in a grazing, overhead manner, drawing the paper’s lightest values onto the stomach and chest, while deepening the darks within the hair, the recesses of the fabric, and the contour of the legs. The lower limbs, solid and massive, guide the gaze toward the right edge with an earthy, almost sculptural weight, where the toes meet the margin with unpretentious naturalness.

The evoked rest is not fragility but undeniable presence. Distant from ethereal idealizations, the body asserts itself in its sheer physical density, transforming sleep into a state of impenetrable introspection. The figure folds into itself with the dignity of one who fully inhabits her own weight, sustaining a silence that seems to arrest time around the stroke.
