Curatorial analysis

An apparent Sunday calm sustains the pulse of this riverside market, where the confined life of animals coexists with the monumental serenity of the city. The immediate focus is seized by the right side, crowded with a modular structure of cages filled with exotic birds, pigeons, roosters, and stacked spherical fishbowls that catch the filtered Parisian light. Contrasting with this dense array of wire and plumage, the left foreground descends to the ground: vendors crouching among rows of terracotta pots and an elderly passerby leaning on his cane establish a slow, earthly rhythm.

The wide panoramic format incorporates the Seine, the arches of its bridges, and the Gothic and Renaissance silhouettes of historic towers, which fade gradually into a chalky atmosphere. Beaufrere organizes the space through a continuous tension between the vertical weight of the architecture and the horizontal dispersion of the market stalls. Receding diagonals on the pavement guide the eye toward the luminous background, where a distant dome dissolves the boundary between the overcast sky and the stone.

The mixed media provides a dry, almost mural-like texture that favors muted ochres, siennas, and soft grays, punctuated only by lively floral accents and the reddish gleam of captive goldfish. A subtle dialogue emerges between freedom and confinement: while the urban horizon promises boundless expanse, the foreground traps flutter and birdsong within wire and glass enclosures. This quiet vibration turns an everyday urban scene into a meticulous testimony of European life between the wars.
