Curatorial analysis

A monumental white tablecloth consumes almost the entire surface, but instead of offering the calm of an empty canvas, it operates as a field of tension where objects seem to float or resist gravity. In this large-scale still life, Ramón Chirinos disrupts traditional laws of perspective: while four dark bottles and a wine glass stand upright on the left like sentinels, the dishes, fish, and cups unfold in an overhead vantage that tilts the table's contents directly toward the viewer.

The chromatic core detonates with the slice of watermelon. Its red flesh, visceral and moist, breaks through the apparent coolness of the palette, engaging in immediate dialogue with the warm ochres of the bananas and surrounding fruit. Around this organic nucleus, contrasting still lifes coexist: fish fading into silvery, violet tones upon elliptical platters counter the dense, heavy silhouette of a black teapot that anchors the right side. Each everyday utensil retains its domestic identity, yet trembles under a nervous vibration that unsettles it.

The mixed media operates through accumulation and scraping. Rather than merely covering the support, the pigment is scratched with graphite and stylus incisions, uncovering underlying layers and revealing fragments of printed collage embedded within the teapot or along the bodies of the fish. Washes of dilute pigment, pasty whites applied with a palette knife, and calligraphic lines delineate transparent glassware without ever imprisoning it in rigid contours.

This coexistence between spontaneous drawing and dense matter endows the scene with a rare temporality: it is not the static portrait of an after-dinner gathering, but the plastic residue of an absence, the luminous trace of a feast whose guests have only just departed.
