Curatorial analysis

A nearly perfect oval of sky-blue water interrupts the vegetal tide and rigorously organizes the entire pictorial space. In this view of the Poás crater, the aquatic surface does not behave like a simple mountain pond, but rather like a slab of contained, polished, hermetic light, whose luminosity immediately contrasts with the impenetrable density of the cloud forest enclosing it entirely.

This surrounding forest mass is not resolved as an indistinct blur, but through a systematic and patient proliferation of rounded crowns. Each vegetal cluster repeats a rhythmic pattern, a meticulous foliage modulated by low lights and shadows that yields a tactile, almost textile texture, vibrant in its disciplined uniformity. The slopes drop steeply toward the center; at the edges of the lagoon, vertical reflections and sheer cuts of land suggest a quiet depth, an abyss contained within an immaculate natural bowl. The elevated vantage point accentuates this sense of a geological sanctuary, positioning the viewer's gaze above a wild territory that seems completely closed off to human passage.

The zenithal light bathing the landscape generates neither strident gleams nor incidental glares: it distributes itself with mineral serenity across the water's mirror and subdues the greens into deep ranges of moss, emerald, and dense shadow. By renouncing the presence of volcanic steam or the customary atmospheric contingency of the summit, the painting transforms a specific site of Costa Rican geography into an archetypal vision. The crater ceases to be an unstable caldera and becomes an unblinking eye beholding the firmament, a precinct where solitude does not evoke abandonment, but rather a monumental and timeless calm.
