Curatorial analysis

An almost devotional symmetry organizes the landscape around an unyielding vertical axis: the cross erected atop the central hill. From that vertex, Hector Campos deploys a rigorous order that transforms the geography of the Arenal region into a pristine vision, where nature answers not to biological disorder, but to a code of neatness and absolute stillness.

The space is constructed through rounded masses of vegetation that frame the mirrored surface of the water. On these slopes, the foliage is resolved through a rhythmic, microscopic accumulation of small crescent brushstrokes, producing a dense, cushioned volume that immediately contrasts with the silent expanse of the lake. In the background, a horizontal procession of cotton-like clouds advances with almost geometric regularity, mediating between the bluish mountain ranges and the limpid blue of the atmosphere.

Along the lower edge, the foreground functions as an intimate, domestic threshold. The presence of small white egrets perched on rocks and dry branches, alongside patches of diminutive red, white, and yellow blossoms, introduces a contemplative, human scale against the vastness of the scenery. Far off, barely suggested on the left bank, tiny rural houses reinforce this feeling of an idyllic, sheltered retreat.

The painting thus oscillates between topographical recollection and sacred reverie. By stripping the scene of any trace of climatic turbulence or erosion, Campos erects a monument to territorial memory, projecting a setting where spiritual quietude and vegetal exuberance coexist under perpetual light.
