Curatorial analysis

A strikingly vertical format turns the painting into a secular altarpiece, where matrimonial liturgy is dismantled with the surgical precision of trompe-l'œil. At the summit, a cupid descends upside down, fastened by electrical tape, inaugurating a downward axis that connects romantic ideals with their daily dosage. The wishbone frames the bridal portrait beneath the eye of a golden escutcheon, while an adhesive note dictates the recipe: a dash, a smidgen, a pinch. The promise of the union is thus reduced to a culinary formula of minimal, fragile proportions.

Toward the center, the verticality stabilizes in a wire hand that holds, like a domestic reliquary, the measuring spoons that materialize that written warning. Carmen Borrasé orchestrates here a confrontation of scales and materials: two articulated action figures, plucked from the imaginary of synthetic muscle and combat, strain to hold a red ribbon weaving through the utensils. There is a deliberate irony in placing these plastic heroes in custody of a chocolate truffle, a wrapped candy, and pastry tongs. The muscular melodrama of the toys clashes directly with the apparent triviality of the tabletop trinkets upon the white cloth.

The pictorial surface operates with near-obsessive clarity against the dark brown backdrop. The synthetic sheen of the articulated limbs, the matte paper, the cold metal of the spoons, and the crinkled reflection of the confectionery wrapper build an absolute tactile illusion, placed strictly in service of disenchantment. By situating the enigma of marital coexistence amidst kitchen tools and rigid figurines, the work suspends the idyllic narrative of love to reveal it as an artificial assemblage, a delicate tension where every balance relies on measuring the exact grains of concession and artifice.
