Curatorial analysis
A tactile and mineral continuity runs through the bodies and objects, dissolving the usual boundaries between still life and the human figure. In this suspended space of veiled horizons and a sandy atmosphere, flesh shares with plant rind the very same stony nature. Three female torsos dominate the left flank: two standing, monumentally framed from the midriff down to the thighs, and a third lying across the foreground, yielded to quiet rest with her face hidden beneath a dense mass of jet-black hair.
The arrangement orchestrates a dialogue of symmetries and formal echoes where nothing is left to chance. Toward the right, on an inclined plane that defies classical gravity, pears and fruits rest, replicating almost exactly the voluptuousness of hips, the curve of breasts, or the fold of groins. These fruits, modeled with geometric incisions and shadowy hollows, take on an almost anthropomorphic presence, while the human figures assume the still quietude of inanimate objects. Only a delicate line of reddish sienna, discreetly contouring certain silhouettes and furniture, breaks the monochrome to grant vibration to the edges.
The oil paint treatment deliberately avoids luster and fleshy sumptuousness to pursue a dry texture akin to stucco or carved stone. Through subtle scraping, superimposed glazes, and a visible mesh of fine crosshatched strokes, light emerges not from an external source, but from within the very density of the whitish and ochre pigment. The most dramatic contrast is struck by the black hair falling heavily to the left, an anchor of absolute shadow that grounds the composition against so much surrounding levity. The scene is thus arrested in a timeless dreamlike atmosphere, where living matter and inert fruit end up merged into a single, inscrutable anatomical landscape.
