Curatorial analysis

The thrust of water against the body commands the scene from the very first glance. This is not the serene depiction of an athletic pursuit, but the kinetic force of a figure breaking through liquid density. The human form, tilted mid-breath, does not rely on defined contours; it is simultaneously constructed and dissolved across a dizzying succession of diagonal planes sweeping the canvas from left to right.

This oblique trajectory organizes the visual tension. The extended arm piercing the water and the half-submerged head serve as recognizable anatomical anchors, yet everything around them is raw turbulence. In the upper register, deep blues and blacks fracture into crests of brilliant white foam and churn, while the left flank erupts with unexpected warm notes (terracottas, ochres, and vivid yellows) that introduce striking thermal friction. This collision between the cold aquatic environment and the warmth of physical exertion turns the surface into a clash of temperatures.

The acrylic medium is handled with remarkable fluidity: palette knife drags dense impastos across sheer washes, laying bare the physical speed of the painting process itself. The directional stroke mirrors the swimmer's own momentum, meaning the gesture does not merely depict the wake, it actively generates it upon the canvas.

Aguas abiertas proposes an experience of total immersion where the boundary between individual and environment dissolves. By fragmenting anatomical clarity into flashes of light and pigment, the work evokes that state of fierce interiority where breathing, stroking, and enduring the current reduce existence to pure motion.
