Curatorial analysis

The three-meter horizontal span immediately immerses the gaze in an overflowing oceanic mass, where water and atmosphere merge into the same blue turbulence. Across this vibrant chromatic field advances a fleet of tall ships that seem to emerge and dissolve simultaneously between foam and wind. Here, the monumental scale does not function as a simple narrative backdrop, but rather as an all-encompassing experience placing the viewer at the very center of a titanic voyage.

The structure is anchored by the vertical rhythm of the masts, dark, almost calligraphic marks that ground the scene and prevent the tide of matter from disintegrating it entirely. In stark contrast to the enveloping coolness of cobalt, sky, and cyan blues, the hulls and sails erupt in a frontal collision of vermilions, oranges, and fiery yellows. The true dramatic tension resides in this thermal friction: the combustible fragility of the vessels facing the untamed power of the open sea.

The canvas surface exhibits an intensely physical and gestural handling. The acrylic paint does not seek to passively depict the surge of the waves, but to embody it through dense impastos applied with palette knife, leaving behind rugged ridges, glazes, and scrapings that unevenly refract light. Broken whites and luminous specks act as breakers and sea spray that blur the contours of the ships, transforming naval architecture into optical vibration and tactile energy.

The title evokes Verne's imagery of abyssal voyages and the mythical excess of oceanic exploration. Yet, rather than illustrating a chronicle of seafaring, the vessels operate as symbols of perseverance and transit. Their fragmented silhouettes challenge the storm not as victims of impending shipwreck, but as stubborn presences cutting through a territory where figuration ultimately surrenders to the sheer pulse of color.
