Curatorial analysis

The saturated sheen of torn wrapping paper dominates the surface in a vortex of metallic creases, polypropylene ribbons, and festive typography. Marijose Terán constructs a relentless trompe-l’œil where the celebration has already passed, leaving only its immediate debris behind. Every fold and fracture of the glossy paper is executed with technical precision that deceives the eye, capturing the sharp glints of light reflecting off plastic surfaces, industrial inks, and sharp creases.

Beneath this chromatic explosion of vivid greens, fiery reds, and party motifs lies an understated lower layer: newspaper pages printed in grayscale. This is neither a neutral nor a purely decorative background. Peeking through the gaps in the visual frenzy are legible fragments of classified ads and funeral notices, notably the heading «OBITUARIOS». The friction between exuberant consumption and the daily chronicle of precarity and mortality functions as a critical conceptual axis, articulated without didacticism, relying purely on visual juxtaposition.

This fragmented arrangement of scraps generates a syncopated rhythm that resists any single focal point. Intricately modeled bows vie for tactile prominence against jagged shards of gift wrap, creating an almost sculptural topography where the illusion of three-dimensionality challenges the flat picture plane. Precise chiaroscuro along the ridges gives tangible physical weight to the void left in the wake of the event.

Such an accumulation of ephemeral detritus invites a quiet meditation on time and the transience of social rituals. By rendering what usually ends up crushed in a trash bin with such meticulous care, the piece rescues the accidental beauty of waste while laying bare the sober, vulnerable reality that the festive glitter briefly managed to conceal.
