Curatorial analysis
Curatorial analysis
Two hypertrophied heads float like carnival masks against an even turquoise background, separated by an improbable heraldic bouquet. Florencia Urbina strips the ritual of contemporary political debate of all institutional solemnity to translate it into sheer carnal farce. On the left panel, Donald Trump appears compressed into an oblique grimace, crowned by a yellow toupee that acquires an almost mineral sculptural volume; on the right, Hillary Clinton bursts into an unhinged laugh, with squinted eyes and an open maw in an expression where enthusiasm borders on terror.
The triptych format, historically reserved for sacred devotion or dynastic chronicles, functions here as a biting visual trap. The central panel, visibly narrower and taller than the side canvases, shelters no mediating truth nor peacemaking figure; it exhibits an intricate bouquet of organic forms oscillating between glowing buds, fleshy fruits, and ceremonial ribbons in blue and vermilion. This sort of artificial offering or televised pageant trophy interrupts the head-on collision of gazes, establishing a physical distance that underscores the irreconcilable tension between the contenders.
The pictorial execution reinforces the discordance between the commercial and the visceral. While the background turquoise unfolds with the synthetic coldness of a broadcast screen, the faces are modeled with feverish agitation: dark lines bounding caricatured contours, dense impastos, and earthy gradations that make the skin flaccid, furrowed with folds seemingly on the verge of collapsing. The strident yellow of both coiffures communicates across the gap like a chromatic echo uniting them in their own contrivance. Rather than illustrating a historical episode from distant reportage, the surface turns the political clash into a puppet-theater altarpiece, where the ambition for power is reduced to gesticulation, vanity, and spectacle.
