Curatorial analysis

In barely seven by ten centimeters, the physical weight of rural labor concentrates with admirable firmness. The compact, pitch-black mass of the ox commands the center of the print, functioning as a visual anchor of absolute density. Faced with the intimate scale of the support, the animal's figure does not appear diminutive but monumental, condensed into a block of ink that defies the passage of time across the paper yellowed by the years.

The direct cut into the matrix resolves the scene through an implacable graphic economy, where every white carved out of the wood fulfills a structural function. To the left, the cart is articulated through synthetic planes and the solid presence of the wheel, whose dark center dialogues with the vertical stakes emerging from the bed. Two human figures frame the group with distinct stances: one seen from behind, seated in the cart beneath a hat outlined with a firm contour, and another standing to the right, the oxherd holding the guiding stick, whose checkered shirt introduces the sole vibrant texture amid the dense blacks and empty voids.

A horizontal band at the base grounds the procession and suspends any attempt at illusionistic perspective, fixing the scene onto a frontal plane of remarkable rigor. There is no descriptive landscape or folkloric embellishment; the background merely retains subtle incisions that allow the paper's fiber to breathe. The tension between the slow pace and the firmness of the engraving conveys the quiet gravity of agricultural toil, turning the print into an austere synthesis of strength, silence, and endurance shared between man and beast.
