Curatorial analysis

A quiet gravity dominates this small drawing, concentrated above all in the fixity of the gaze. Standing barely eighteen centimeters tall, the figure emerges from the strict economy of graphite: intense eyes, heavy-lidded beneath densely drawn eyebrows, anchoring the expression in an impenetrable introspection. The turban, shaped through concentric curves and overlapping planes, wraps the head with sculptural solidity and lets a fall of cloth drop over the right shoulder, establishing a vertical counterweight to the slight turn of the neck.

The construction of the portrait rests on a precise interplay between the sharpness of the contour and the emptiness of the support. While the central features (the firm set of the lips, the projection of the nose, and the button fastening the collar) receive definitive accents, the flesh tones dispense with heavy shading. The artist entrusts the light to the warm blankness of the paper, delicately modulated by subtle smudges that suggest the cheekbones' underlying bone structure. Toward the tunic, loose strokes and longitudinal lines convey the fall of the fabric without needing to delineate it completely, allowing the body to breathe and dissolve naturally toward the bottom of the sheet.

The support reveals the passage of time through oxidation spots scattered across the surface, melding with the graphite's patina and reinforcing its nature as a direct sketch, almost a studio relic. The absolute absence of a background concentrates all dramatic weight on the model's physiognomy: a mature man whose orientalist identity is stated through his attire and confirmed by his reserved demeanor. Echandi achieves here a remarkable balance between academic drawing rigor and the freshness of a quick study, endowing this intimate scale with a sober, dignified, and lasting resonance.
