Curatorial analysis

The gesture of raising an arm to draw the curtain back opens up the space and sets the rhythm for the entire scene. A female figure, seen from a rear angle that serenely reveals her profile, arrests the exact instant when the intimacy of rest yields to daylight. Berthau does not place the body in a rigid academic pose, but rather in a vital movement of awakening and opening outward.

Structurally, the anatomy establishes a tense yet harmonious dialogue with the room's architecture. While the window frame and the vertical fall of the blue curtain impose firm orthogonal lines, the curves of the torso, hips, and legs introduce a sinuous cadence that travels across the plane along an upward diagonal. The translucent ochre veil falling from her back to the floor enhances this sensation of lightness; the pictorial medium, diluted with watercolor ease, suggests the folds through subtle washes that allow the warm luminosity of the skin to breathe.

The window functions as a painting within the painting. Beyond the glass, the countryside awakens in a succession of gentle hills washed in greyish greens, punctuated by small groves and the red roof of a solitary house. This peaceful landscape contrasts with the immediate presence of the textiles and the volumetric weight of the earthy form resting in the lower right corner.

The surface avoids any dramatic chiaroscuro in favor of a clean, diaphanous, and enveloping light. The woman exposes herself to the morning clarity without modesty or pretense, seamlessly integrating the fragility of her figure into the measured tempo of the nature unfolding outside.
