Curatorial analysis

The sea is not painted here as liquid, but as matter in combustion. The two vessels emerge and dissolve simultaneously upon the canvas, caught in an atmosphere of leaden tones and veiled ochres where red bursts without respite. Ileana Piszk turns the traditional seascape into a clash of tectonic forces: the hulls and sails, barely hinted at by a nervous web of dark lines reminiscent of masts and rigging, yield to violent impastos of vermilion, orange, and bone white.

The distribution of space reinforces this sense of constant siege. On the left, the primary vessel surges forward tilted, heavy with thick matter, confronting a swell that possesses no defined contour but rather the friction of a palette knife. On the right, at a smaller scale that introduces depth without resorting to classical perspective, the second ship seems to respond to that same onslaught or seek an escape point outside the frame. Between them lies no navigable calm, but rather an intermediate zone of splatters, scrapings, and greenish glazes that blur the horizon and fuse sky with water.

Across the large-format canvas (one meter by one meter thirty), the acrylic works in strata. In the background, horizontal and vertical drags establish a dense, almost vaporous atmosphere, revealing underlayers like sea fog or light filtering through storm clouds. In contrast, upon the hulls the paste accumulates in sharp reliefs that cast micro-shadows depending on how light strikes the room. Dos en Altamar suggests an ordeal of shared endurance rather than a mere nautical crossing: two kindred presences testing themselves against dissolution, united solely by the tension of the element that surrounds and defines them.
