Curatorial analysis

Two colossal trunks, draped in dense curtains of vines falling like vegetal veils, dictate the entrance to this monumental landscape. They function almost as columns of a natural temple or wings of a theatrical proscenium, corralling the gaze to force it down a dirt shoreline and across a mirror of dark water. At this threshold, the scale of 180 by 140 centimeters not only commands physical reverence, but pulls the viewer into a nearly breathable immersion, saturated with humidity and silence.

The oil paint is executed with microscopic precision in the foreground, where dried leaves upon the earth and trailing vines maintain a tactile sharpness, constructed through delicate modulations of golden light and dense shadows. Yet, as the eye travels beyond the pond, the brushwork leaves behind crisply delineated details to make way for a whitish, vaporous atmosphere. At the heart of the forest, deep greens soften into grayish and bluish tones; the trees in the distance lose physical weight and become ethereal presences, dissolved in a morning mist that conceals any urban horizon.

This duality between the almost tectonic solidity of the foreground vegetation and the evanescence of the background endows the forest with an ageless quality. The water, placid and still, duplicates the vertical gleam of the sky like a portal or a pause in the breath of the landscape. By entitling the scene Bosque de la Habana, the painting deliberately avoids the postcard city, proposing instead the discovery of a primordial sanctuary where botanical density safeguards an intact, solemn solitude.
