Curatorial analysis

The glare of the Mediterranean midday does not flatten the scene: it breaks it into a mosaic of dense reflections and splinters of pure light. In the foreground, a flotilla of traditional fishing boats occupies nearly two-thirds of the canvas, packed so closely against the viewer's gaze that it instantly erases the distance between pier and observer. The water ceases to be a uniform liquid surface and turns into an energetic arena of chromatic collision, where creamy impastos, steel blues, and near-abyssal shadows hold up the real weight of the floating hulls.

A long inclined spar cuts across the frame with an audacious diagonal that breaks the complacent horizontality of the shoreline. This dominant line, extended by the taut lines mooring the prows, establishes a rigorous geometric vibration, typical of rigging and everyday harbor labor. Around it, the small wheelhouses, wooden reels, and a red life ring outline a human and utilitarian scale, rendered through swift brush marks and tactile touches of remarkable visual precision.

Behind this maritime crowding rises the coastal frontage of Sanary, modulated in warm pinks, muted ochres, and the dry greens of palm trees, crowned by the vertical spire of the bell tower. This background architecture does not compete with the prominence of the boats; it operates as a warm screen that absorbs the reverberation of the air, restoring a serene atmosphere against the dock's density.

Ricart bypasses the complacency of a tourist postcard by relying on the frankness of impasto oil paint, where each stroke of brush or knife retains its relief without pretense. The scene successfully conveys the saline weight of working vessels and that elusive quality of the Provençal coast, where light does not simply illuminate objects, but seems to carve them directly upon the canvas.
